Split Testing – Increase Your Conversion Rate

Filed Under (List Building) by Paul on 26-04-2009

Now that we know how to setup our squeeze page let us look at the next step, and that is to increase the conversion rate on your squeeze page.

To improve our conversion rate we need to split test our page, by having 2 squeeze pages that show alternately. Advertisers using Pay Per Click reguarly use split testing but it can also be beneficial in most other forms of advertising your products and services.

Split testing can be carried out using a software application, this can be one that you install on your own website hosting account or hosted by a third party.

Having created your squeeze page, make a copy of it, I suggest you call them index A and index B, now all you need to do is make one small change to index B from your original and you are ready to setup your testing. The pages need to have only minimal differences to be able to effectively carry out split testing.

Here are some variations you can make on your squeeze pages when carrying out your split testing:

If you are going to test different page layouts then this is where you should start, make sure your copy is the same on both pages. Once you have identified the best layout it is time to move onto refining your squeeze page.

Try with and without graphic or change your graphic for a picture of yourself, try placing your image in a different position on your page.

Change headline, by making small adjustments to your headline you can test to get the best converting headline. You can also try altering headline color or font. You can use this on the sub-headline too for improving your conversion rate.

Alter the number of bullet points on your page. Change the content of your bullet points. Bold alternate bullet points, or place them in a table with a colored background.

Alter the wording or text color of your call to action, try bolding or italicising the text.

You can also test different background colors.

Only ever change one thing at a time on your page.

You need about 30 – 50 clicks on each page, this will give you enough information to see which page is working best. All you need to do now is replace the worst performing page with a new one, keep testing your page until you are happy with the conversion rate you are getting.

Repeated testing will see you improving copy and allow you to achieve the highest converting page for optins and customers. You can use the above techniques and strategies on squeeze pages and sales pages.
